To the Editor,
On my way into the market, I passed a news stand from which the headline screamed, Iraqis May Have Tortured 2 to Death. Before my stomach had time to return to an upright position, I was greeted by a smiling Salvation Army man, cheerily wishing me a Merry Christmas while Elvis sang, Here Comes Santa Clause.
To all those righteous indignants who are worked up over the media-fabricated War on Christmas, I say this: When you are willing to admit that Jesus, for whom Christmas is celebrated, would not have condoned war, would not have condoned torture, would not have condoned massive profiteering by the rich and powerful while millions of children go uneducated, uncared for, and unfed, would not have condoned practices that pollute the planet and jeopardize its livability--grant me that Jesus would have wept to witness the suffering we Americans perpetrate, and I will gladly wish you a Merry Christmas.
