Dear Ralph,
Did you hear George W’s dad gave the 2003 George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service to Ted Kennedy? Excellent choice! Kennedy is a true patriot!
You can give an award too. Call it the Ralph Nader Higher Principles Award. Give it to the person who most helps George W. Bush win the 2004 election by sticking to his principles! Right now, I’d say the two best candidates are Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich. I can picture three scenarios:
Scenario 1: Dean gets the Democratic nomination and sticks to a brilliant strategy of being “the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks.” He shrewdly decides not to get a single vote in the south so he doesn’t have to waste time and money campaigning there. He concentrates on the other 39 states and maybe even wins Vermont and New Hampshire! Give the award to Dean!
Scenario 2: Kucinich gets less votes in the primaries than Al Sharpton or Carol Mosely Braun and drops out, taking with him all his enraged, highly principled voters who decide to sit out the general election. Give the award to Kucinich!
Scenario 3: You jump into the race, taking away all of Kucinich’s highly principled votes, and skimming some highly principled Demo votes off the top. Then Bush wins again, and that’ll show everybody that the system is corrupt and there’s very little difference between the Democrats and Republicans!
If Scenario 3 plays out, give the award to yourself!
Sincerely,
Carl Estrada
